Computex 2004, Day 6
Posted on 22 June 2004

In this sixth and final installment of our guide to Computex 2004, which we're incorrectly calling "Day 6", we have all sorts of devices from the VIA stand - some of which you will be able to buy, others you won't...

Glory Personal Gaming Console   VIA Demo
Panel Device
Insight SmartTV   MBO Set Top Box

VIA's Glory Personal Gaming Console Platform is a reference device to woo manufacturers, powered by the CN400 chipset EPIA SP motherboard (in a splendid mirrored case from MaPower). Next up is another demo unit showing an EPIA motherboard in a Panel configuration. Insight Solutions showed their SmartTV 2120 running Windows XP behind a 20.1" LCD, Eden CPU powered of course, with an instant-on DVD playback BIOS. The 4th picture is a VIA-powered set top box from MBO.

APlux Tablet PC   Humax IP Set Top Box   MUSE Receptor   Tranquil Media Centre Unit

Aplux had their 1Ghz TVM2C Tablet PC on show, with 10.4" display. Prolific set top box maker Humax, had a VIA powered unit on display. Muse Research showed their Receptor - a dedicated device for adding digital effect processing power to existing computer-based recording systems. Tranquil PC showed an impressive demonstration of an EPIA SP-based unit running Windows Media Centre.

EPIA-N Reference Device

  Elusive Nano-ITX Giftbox   Silverstone
Nano-ITX Case
  Unicorn Mini-ITX Enclosure

VIA had their EPIA-N reference box out again, this time in a running state (rather like our Nanode). Initial signs were that Nano performance was very similar to the equivalent C3 CPU, with very good quality DVD playback. The Nano-ITX boards themselves now won't be available until the end of the year however, so don't break open the piggy bank just yet. We then examined the elusive limited edition wooden Nano-ITX giftbox (subject of many imploring emails from eager customers), and decided though nice, at least one of our regular contributors could make a nicer one... Finally we spotted the Silverstone Nano-ITX case again, and spotted a custom enclosure made by Unicorn specially for their industrial Mini-ITX boards.
