EPIA N10000 Review

VIA only had a 95mm x 35mm (approx) space to cram as many back panel connectors as possible, with a number of other connectors attachable to motherboard. This is what they chose.

The S-Video connector can provide S-Video output in both NTSC and PAL - this will give the best picture quality on a television, unless you are lucky enough to have a Plasma/LCD with VGA input. The RCA-Out connector is a dual function port that may be used either to provide composite video or S/PDIF audio - it is switchable by a jumper behind it. VIA Mini-ITX owners will be familiar with this arrangement, which is present on almost every board they have produced to date.

Also familiar will be the 3x 3.5mm audio connectors which double as 2+2+2 = 6 channel outputs, switchable in software. See Appendix A of your user manual (when they put this in).

The pair of USB 2.0 connectors sits underneath the Ethernet connector, with 2 more USB headers on the board providing up to 4 more USB 2.0 connections. Ethernet is a common or garden 10/100 affair, with an RJ-45 connector.

A colour coded PS2 extender cable is provided to connect any legacy PS2 keyboard or mice you may have, or more importantly to keep those USB connectors free for something more exciting. Enclosure manufacturers would have to determine whether to include mounting points for these in their designs - so don't rely on PS2 compatibility if you aren't building your own case.

Main graphic duties are handled by a common or garden VGA connector above the audio connectors. This will come as a disappointment to many who were hoping for DVI, which is backwards compatible with VGA with a cheap adapter. Considering the long development period, surely somebody at VIA would have thought to include this. An optical digital audio output would also have been nice, while we're thinking about it...
