DC-DC Converters

DC-DC converters accept a single direct current input, and convert it into very stable 3V, 5V and 12V lines that a Mini-ITX motherboard needs. The DC input will normally come from an external AC Adapter. Our most popular DC-DC converters are picoPSUs:

This chart classes Mini-ITX motherboard types as the following:

  • Socket : Socket LGA775/LGA115X/AM2/AM3 Motherboards
  • Embedded : Boards with attached Atom/VIA/Fusion processors

Please note that compatability can only be assured when paired with an appropriate AC Adapter or other DC power source. When socket LGA775/LGA1156/LGA1155/AM2/AM3 processors are used, their power consumption must be well within the rating of the DC Adapter. Allow for other board components when estimating power consumption of socket boards. A 65 Watt TDP processor would require at least a 90 Watt power source, not counting other peripherals such as hard disks.

A general guide for estimating peripheral power usage is 1 Watt for an SSD, 4 Watts for 2.5in drives, 8-10+ Watts for 3.5in drives, 4 Watts for slimline optical drives and 50+ Watts for a single 5.25in optical drive. Check manufacturer's specifications for graphic card and other card types.

We recommend the 110W+ AC Adapters and picoPSU-120+ with Socket Mini-ITX boards using 65W+ TDP processors. Our 80W AC Adapter and a picoPSU-90 will safely power a Socket Mini-ITX board with a 35W TDP processor. Most Embedded boards and peripherals can be powered with the 80W AC Adapter and picoPSU-80 or picoPSU-90. The 60W AC Adapter can be used in many cases.

Only certain picoPSUs are compatible with the Mini-Fit power connector on the 150W 4-pin and 192W 4-pin AC Adapters. Check the 'MFit' column or individual item descriptions.

Please note that batteries suffer from voltage drop over time, and cranking vehicles causes voltage spikes - our vehicle PSUs are designed for battery and vehicle use.

Universal 12V DC 60W 5A AC Adapter suitable for use with any of our picoPSU DC-DC Converters, and Mini-ITX Motherboards with 12V DC Input. Also suitable as an upgrade, replacement or spare part for many enclosures that require 12V DC Input (e.g. M200, M300, M350, most Morex cases, several 60W/80W Travla Cases, and many others).

Latest design is 2/3 the size of our previous model.

Most commonly paired with the following picoPSUs:

Also suitable for use in your own projects, or with motherboards with 12V DC Input such as:

Dimensions: 66% the size of our previous 60W AC Adapters at just 51 x 30 x 108mm (0.165 litres)

Notes: This Adapter is fanless, and fitted with a 2.5/5.5mm centre positive jack connector. This 12V AC Adapter is not compatible with 90W and some 120W Travla Cases or as a replacement for Zotac or Asus AC Adapters, as these require a 19V power input. Larger capacity AC Adapters provide more headroom and could extend the life of your components. Full size (5.25in) optical drives draw a lot of power at startup - use 100W or larger AC Adapter with picoPSU-120 or larger. Always email us to check compatibility if you do not intend to use with Mini-ITX equipment.

This adapter is provided with a UK power cable, with Euro and USA style power cables also available. Universal adapter - will work with any voltage 110 - 240V.

The DCDC-USB is a 135 x 37mm high power buck-boost microcontroller DC-DC converter. This unit accepts any 6-34V regulated or non-regulated input, and can output up to 100W at 12V, or at any voltage between 5-24V.

The output of the DCDC-USB is 12V regulated by default, and can be changed using simple jumper settings to 5V, 6V, 9V, 12V, 13.5V, 18V or 24V or via a USB cable anywhere from 5-24V in 0.25V increments.

The DCDC-USB can be used to power motherboards with single rail power input from any voltage, or to convert any voltage ranging 6-34V to any output from 5-24V. A DCDC-USB can be placed in-line with a standard picoPSU to provide a wide input range to a standard motherboard.

Additional Cables: To power a Mini PC or Board with 12V 2.5/5.5mm input (e.g. all JBC units, and some 12V Thin-ITX), use the "P4 to 2.5/5.5mm DC Plug OUTPUT Cable". To power from one of our AC Adapters, use the "P4 to 2.5/5.5mm DC Barrel INPUT Cable". Both can be found in the "you may also require" section.

The DCDC-USB has 4 modes of operation:

  • Dumb mode: Regular buck-boost DC-DC converter with wide (6-34V) input producing a fixed 12V or 5-24V output
  • Automotive: Acts as an intelligent ignition aware PSU - will send ON/OFF pulse to the motherboard when ignition is turned. Very low standby power consumption (under 1mA).
  • UPS mode: Acts as an intelligent UPS unit, shutting down at prescribed battery voltages.
  • Scripted mode: The DCDC-USB can be programmed to wake up and sleep based on pre-programmed scripts.

Specifications: Dimensions: 135 x 37mm; Minimum Input Voltage: 6V; Maximum Input Voltage: Electronic shut down at 34V (clamping will occur 34-36V); Deep-Discharge shutdown threshold: 11.2V; Input Current Limit: 10A (protected by mini-blade fuse); Regulation Accuracy: 2.5%; Operating Temperature: -40 to 85 C; Storage Temperature: -55 to 85 C; MTBF: >100,000 Hours @ 65C; Efficiency at 9-16V Input: >95% with 12V 2A Output; Input and Output Connectors: Mini-Fit JR 4pin.

Further specifications: The DCDC-USB can be used as a remote on/off switch capable of switching up to 6A (8A peak). Fused input, TVS protected. Mini USB Type B connector (USB cable required for programming, not provided). All Solid Japanese made Sanyo SVPD Series Polymer Capactitors.
